Do not hold your child’s hand

Norrtälje signage

Strange signage in Norrtälje, Sweden.

We all know what the red diagonal means. What do we make of this combination?

    • Do not hold your child’s hand.
    • Do not bring your child at all.
    • No kidnappers here! Let your child run free.
    • No traffic danger; let children loose.
    • Children: do not bring your adult.

This was a regular-looking street sign on an ordinary road. After seeing this sign, I did notice the same sign elsewhere, without the red diagonal. And no, the red was not graffitied.

Any other ideas as to the meaning of this odd sign? Swedes: what do you say?

  1. Are you sure it doesn’t mean, “please do not abduct children here”?

    😉

  2. As a Swede with a valid driving licence it would be embarrassing if I didn’t know what the sign ment…

And as you’ve probably guessed already, the sign without the red bar means “Pedestrian zone”.

  3. Thanks everybody! Especially Jonas, who replies with authority!

  4. Almost correct Martin, it means End of pedestrian zone.

  5. That’s my guess too. End of good zone for promenades.

  6. Thank you, Martin. I had no idea the red bar could mean “end of.”

    Any other ideas, People? Swedes?

  7. I guess: End of school zone.

In Canada we have similar signs, and in Europe the red bar mean “End of…”

    I may be wrong…
