Hotel Oddity #16

I stay in a lot of hotels, some of which are the best or most unique in the world. This one in Hong Kong—not so hot.

Why was there a bucket under the sink? And in the bucket, a smaller bucket.

Fill it up to flush the toilet? Bail out the bathtub? Store up drinking water? I don’t think I want to know…

  1. It may also be for Muslims. They have strict procedures for cleanliness and do not use toilet paper but wash with water when they go use the toilet. I live in the middle east and all the bathrooms there have spray hoses by the toilets. In Pakistan I stayed in a house that used this bucket system.

    Actually the answer is quite simple. It’s so that you can have a bucket bath.

    Fill the large bucket up with water. Use the smaller bucket to wet yourself down, then soap up and finally use the smaller bucket to wash the soap off. With practise you can actually have a full bath and wash your hair with a single bucket of water.
