lol at some peoples comments. i feel 100 times safer in panama than anywhere in miami, nyc, or la.

colon is the only place that is really somewhat of a off limits when u visit panama. panama city has a few bad neighborhoods el chorillo etc, but no need to go to them.

beware of colon, but theres literally no reason to go, unless ur like us risk takers and want to see all types of life.

people in panama rule and in colon u will even see smiling faces wherever u go.

panama, by far the safest latin american country, even over costa rica all day everyday.

PANAMA ONE LOVE.

Remembering what happened to an organized ship tour, running around Panama doesn't sound safe or smart at all.

For the curious traveler, walking around Colon with one of these guides can be very rewarding! There's not much to see but ordinary life, which is what some of us feel is the most interesting part of travel. I brought a couple of friends with me on one walkaround in Colon, and they were fascinated and enthralled (also, granted, a bit scared). A bus tour (of any city) gives one a superficial view of select "tourist-worthy" sites. Walking with guides, especially those who know the dangers of a place, gives the visitor an honest look at real life. Obviously, this is not for everyone. And there's no guarantee of safety!

Rick, I hate the term for that shirt, also. First time I've used it! There will be more to the story soon—Bob's version.

'Wife-beater' - I hate that term! ;) Hey - even Daniel Craig didn't like being in Colon! Love Gilberto's hat - want one like that for my daughter! Looks like a football fan hat. Sounds like 24/7 party there, to be honest. Kudos to them for surviving. That building is really falling apart! That girl in pink is stunning. They all look like great kids. Happy kids. The portrait of the girl and the boy is priceless. I'm sad the article is over already.
